An underrated costume design tour de force.
When people talk about New Jack City the references are fairly consistent: “my brother’s keeper”, “cancel that b*tch, I’ll buy a new one”, Ice Tea’s suss “I want to shoot you so bad my [insert eggplant emoji] is hard”, and of course:
BUT NOBODY TALKS ABOUT HOW THEY SERVED LOOKS IN ALMOST EVERY SCENE. Try it, Google: “New Jack City Fashion” and see how hard it is to come up with some images or articles on the cult classic’s slayage.
Meanwhile, every time I watch the movie I’m too distracted imagining raiding Nino’s closet to even notice Ice Tea’s terrible tough guy act. And I’m not just taking hoodies. I’m taking Nino’s accessories, his suits and maybe even his haircut.

So yesterday my friends called me Nino Brown because THEY GET ME. Wesley Snipes in New Jack City has been on my fashion mood board for years. I just need a plug to send me HQ stills for the v. important @dyynamics #EYESEE story because my search has been unsuccessful. Peep my 👀 @ she highlight for more lewks. And go to @dyynamics for counter post.
Check out more of my favorite New Jack City fashion moments below.
A good power suit never goes out of style.
You can’t own too many power suits, and if your closet isn’t filled to the brim with some tailored bright colored ensembles, Nino Brown is the mood board addition you need. Because honestly, a monotone suit is the fastest way to land you on this page.
Also, it helps if you’re a fine chocolate brother a la Wesley Snipes.
How else would you slay this red power suit:
Are you really your brother’s keeper if you don’t color coordinate?
You’re going to see this pic a couple of times because we have to mention sis’ red jacket with tie front and leggings paired with kitten heels steez. And the pleats on the trousers deserve some attention:
Check out this orange/green aka pumpkin finesse:
This was clearly a moment for the double-breasted suit…
But the bigger star is the Nehru double-breasted jacket. GIVE ME THAT!:
So many good hats.
The medium single hoop earring.
Not ashamed to admit I own a pair because of this movie.
Making a case for adding more cobalt blue to your wardrobe.
Take a page out of Uniqua’s book and…
match your outfit to your lingerie.
Big shout out to costume designer Bernard Johnson for bringing Nino Brown aesthetic to life.
