I won’t let Donald Trump’s baby hands shake me and you shouldn’t either.
“Congratulations on your new president!” was the facetious Snap I received yesterday morning. My heart is heavy and the weight of a Trump Presidency has doubled courtesy of a few sleepless nights. I’m not proud to be an American today and I’m not the only one. My commute to Manhattan was gloomy. Heads were low, tensions thick and the fear palpable. How did this happen? How could Trump – a man so full of hate, openly selfish, corrupt by power – run one of the greatest nations in this world? A nation that was built on the backs of immigrants, that once offered the promise of unity and prided itself in being forward thinking.
But then I remembered – change doesn’t come wrapped pretty, it doesn’t come with all the bells and whistles of a smooth transition. It shows up ugly first.
Strangely, this outcome has also fueled me with a greater sense of purpose and the energy to move my vision forward, no matter the challengers or challenges. I am not crippled by this, I am not going to lay down and give up, I am not going to give Trump and his baby hands the opportunity to shake me. I am bigger than this and I will keep pushing. #IamMyOwnPresident.
Part of this energy comes from knowing that my generation has been the catalyst for change and for creating the ideas that have not only sparked movements but shaped the FUTURE.
And we have shown time and again that we are not afraid to stand up and fight. Because ultimately “nobody can give you freedom, nobody can give you equality or justice. If you are a man you take it.” We will continue to pave the way for the next four years and give Trump a term he will never forget. He’ll understand what it means to be under our Presidency.
I encourage you to continue to be and feel empowered. Utilize all opportunities to mobilize or fight back, exercise your civic duty, research the organizations that share your affinity. Build up your communities, invest your dollars where it matters. You are not alone in this and more importantly you are not defeated. This is the perfect time to rise up and be heard.
To the degree that Mr. Trump is serious about pursuing policies that improve the lives of working families in this country, I and other progressives are prepared to work with him. To the degree that he pursues racist, sexist, xenophobic and anti-environment policies, we will vigorously oppose him. – Bernie Sanders
